I was reading an article in Warhorse magazine about why weapons go missing (FN1). This is not my usual reading material, but it was tucked into the seatback pocket on United Airlines, and I had 4 ½ hours to kill. Also, in the seatback pocket was a cookie wrapper… thanks, United!!!

After some research, I discovered that losing military hardware is hardly a rare occurrence. It’s a little scary to think that the military failed to track $1 billion in equipment to Ukraine (FN2). Despite having regulations and tracking systems like RFID and specialized software, the military’s massive scale, rapid deployments, outdated systems, and complex supply chain create vulnerabilities. At the core of these problems are human errors.

The military has plenty of regulations and systems already in place to track weapons, such as RFID and software programs. So the issue may be the sheer size of the military, the chaos of rapid deployment, the use of legacy systems, and the complexity of the supply chain and procurement process. And, at the end of the day, people are involved.
